Gps Compare - Top 10 Car Gps Systems In The Uk!

Each of the families were given four basic measurements to rate the GPS units.

1) How accurate is the destination information.

2) Speed at which re-routing occurs if a mistake is made.

3) How did it work in built up areas.

4) How easy was it to use

The market is flooded with different companies that make portable car GPS navigational receivers, but the top players who dominate the UK market right now are clearly Tom Tom and Garmin, however there are a few other companies that offer some good products as well.

Tom Tom hold the number 1 position with Garmin coming a close second.

It can be very confusing if you are buying a GPS unit for the first time and you need to know that many of them offer the same functions so you need to think about what else it is you want from the device.

This review gives a good basic overview of what will be right for you and your family.

GPS compare very well but before you buy you should consider the following:

1. You could opt to have a built in GPS when you buy a new car. The benefit of these are that they cannot be stolen, but they can be an expensive option. Portable GPS compare well and are cheaper to buy but can be easily stolen if not stored out of sight, but they can be moved between cars.

2. GPS units have many similar features. It may be that points of interest which is great for holiday’s, or traffic data which is a god send if you are in the car a lot. You will need to decide before you buy what is important to you and what you are likely to use it for. I have listed the major benefits of each product.

3. Try before you buy. Ask at the store if you can try the GPS in your car to make sure you like it and can operate it easily.

4. Ask the retailer how up to date the mapping software is and check how much buying future updates will cost.

5. Buying online will probably be cheaper but prices can vary between £130 - £260. You should go to a store first and get the feel of which one appeals to you more before you buy.

The main functions that all GPS devices have are:

Text-to-Speech – This is basically where the device talks instructions to you as you drive.

Traffic Warnings – They all provide warnings of upcoming traffic delays and provide you with and alternative route, but only some of them have lifetime upgrades included in the price, so you may want to put this on your checklist.

Voice Recognition - Allows you to speak instructions to the unit, instead of having to type them in.

Speeding alert - Advises you to slow down when you are in a restricted speed zone.

Other things to consider are the screen size. Most of the GPS compare well on this with a 4.3” screen, but if you want one with a larger screen go for the Sony NV-U82.

Some of them also have Bluetooth connectivity where you can hook up your MP3 player and even photo’s.
