Gps Tracking And Its Use By The Police

Posted by Calipso | Tuesday, August 19, 2008 | 0 comments »

The GPS tracking system is a marvelous invention. People are finding more and more uses for this state of the art technology. It is saving money and, arguably, lives. Used by individuals, small businesses, huge companies, and fleet owners, GPS tracking devices have also been employed by law enforcement agents to track the whereabouts of suspects, although the legality of the latter has been fought in court.

While it has been argued that such use by law enforcement agencies is a violation of the 4th amendment prohibiting unlawful search and seizure, that argument has been struck down in court. At least one judge has argued that attaching a GPS device to the vehicle of someone they have reason to suspect is engaged in criminal is tantamount to following the suspect. No warrant is needed.

According to one lawyer whose area of interest is cyber crime, as long as the tracking device is installed on a "public" part of the vehicle, such as on the bumper or underneath, there is no violation of the 4th amendment. GPS tracking and its uses by the police continue to be a tricky subject, however.

What is not debatable is the benefit derived by business owners who use GPS devices to keep an eye on their drivers. Speed can be monitored so safety increases. Stop time is reported and headings are recorded. Therefore, drivers waste less time; overtime is cut; more stops are made daily; and fleet cars assigned to employees are not used for personal trips. GPS tracking records are also useful tools in billing verification! Needless to say, the devices are very useful in tracking stolen vehicles. In fact, some states now require insurance companies offer a reduction to customers whose vehicles have tracking devices.

Vehicles carrying real time GPS tracking devices can be located from any computer or other device able to access the internet. The uses of these devices are plentiful. Whether you are in business, the police force, or even the parent of a teen with a brand new driver's license, the benefits are immediately clear.

Gps Ionospheric Delay And Possible Solution

Posted by Calipso | Tuesday, August 19, 2008 | 0 comments »

Gps Ionospheric Delay And Possible Solution To This Problem

GPS ionospheric delay is one of the most common issues with the gps navigation systems. Inconsistencies of atmospheric conditions affect the speed of the GPS signals as they pass through the Earth’s atmosphere and ionosphere. Correcting these errors is a significant challenge to improving GPS position accuracy.

These effects are smallest when the satellite is directly overhead and become greater for satellites nearer the horizon since the signal is affected for a longer time. Once the receiver’s approximate location is known, a mathematical model can be used to estimate and compensate for these errors.

Because ionospheric delay affects the speed of microwave signals differently based on frequency – a characteristic known as dispersion – both frequency bands can be used to help reduce this error. Some military and expensive survey-grade civilian receivers compare the different delay in the frequencies to measure atmosphere dispersion and apply a more precise correction.

This can be done in civilian GPS receivers without decrypting the P(Y) signal carried on L2 by tracking the carrier wave instead of the modulated code. To do this on lower cost receivers, a new civilian code signal on L2 called L2C was added to the satellies. This new signal allows a direct comparison of the L1 and L2 signals using the coded signal instead of the carrier wave.

The effects of the ionosphere generally change slowly and can be averaged over time. The effects for any particular geographical area can be easily calculated by comparing the GPS-measured position to a known surveyed location. This correction is also valid for other receivers in the same general location.

Several systems send this information over radio or other links to allow L1 only receivers to make corrections. The date is transmitted via satellite system and transmits it on the GPS frequency using a special pseudo-random number so only one antenna and receiver is required.

Humidity also causes a variable delay resulting in errors similar to ionospheric delay but occuring in the troposphere. This effect is more localized and changes more quickly than ionospheric effects and is not frequency dependent. These traits make it much more difficult to make precise measurement and compensation for humidity errors than with the ionospheric effects.

Changes in altitude also change the amount of delay due to the signal passing through less of the atmosphere at higher elevations. Since the GPS receiver computes its approximate altitude, this error is relatively simple to correct.

GPS signals can also be affected by multi-path issues where the radio signals reflect off of surrounding terrain such as buildings, canyon walls, and hard ground. These delayed signals can cause inaccuracy as a well.

To correct these errors, many techniques have been developed. How these techniques work depends on addressing the long delay multi-path or shorter delay multi-path. Tips On Choosing Blue Tooth Enabled Gps Devices

Blue Tooth GPS devices are becoming more common these days as many people realize that they are a great technological combination with many practical applications. It is common today to find that almost every mobile phone comes with GPS. Before getting to know how Blue Tooth GPS systems can benefit our lives, we should know more about Blue Tooth and the benefits of Blue Tooth.

Blue Tooth was first invented by Ericsson, before it was generally accepted by other companies. Blue Tooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between personal devices such as mobile phones, laptops, PCs and PDAs over a secure, globally unlicensed short-range radio frequency. Even the new Nintendo Wii system also uses the Blue Tooth technology.

Generally, Blue Tooth is a standard and communications protocol primarily designed for devices that require low power consumption and short range communication. These features enable Blue Tooth devices to be power efficient. Since Blue Tooth is a wireless technology, it allows devices to exchange information with each other without the need for messy and unwieldy wires.

Blue Tooth works in a way such that it allows other devices to transfer information with each other when they are in a specific range. The receiving power must be high enough in order for the exchange of information to take place. A Blue Tooth device can connect with another device only when it is within a range of 10 meters.

Basically, as long as devices have Blue Tooth technology installed in them, they do not have to be separately made compatible. For example, a Toshiba gadget with Blue Tooth can exchange information with a Sony gadget that has Blue Tooth technology built-in.

Now, GPS can also be integrated with Blue Tooth to create Blue Tooth GPS devices. Blue Tooth GPS allows users to communicate and share the correct information regarding their location of other location-specific information. Users can make use of Blue Tooth GPS tracker systems to find their way should they get lost anywhere. This device is particularly useful for search parties, trekkers, mountaineers or other people who like outdoor activities.

With the combination of Blue Tooth and GPS, this technology is very useful for people who need to find their way, and also can help others if they meet with any unforeseen circumstances.

Blue Tooth GPS Receivers Have Many Applications

Blue Tooth GPS receivers are a by-product of the great combination of two interesting technologies. Devices with Blue Tooth GPS receivers have recently become more popular and newer models are being introduced at a greater pace than before as users become more familiar with them. There are more people who can vouch for the usefulness of Blue Tooth GPS receivers for various types of tasks. For the uninitiated, it might be a little challenging to select a suitable Blue Tooth GPS receiver. Fortunately, a lot of information is available on the Internet. You can do your research and due diligence before you purchase a Blue Tooth GPS receiver for yourself. Gps Tracking Watches

Posted by Calipso | Tuesday, August 19, 2008 | 0 comments »

The two manufactures currently making GPS tracking watches are Timex/Garmin and Suunto. Although Casio used to manufacture GPS tracking watches, it has been discontinued. There are eight different models in the line up from Timex/Garmin. Although they do not give information on location, they do provide systems for athletes marketed as speed and distance. There is two parts composing the systems speed and distance. There is a GPS receiver and the GPS tracking watch, which is connected wirelessly by a radio signal. You can wear the GPS receiver on your arm or clip it your belt. However, there is GPS tracking watches that do actually track your location information.

Garmin introduced the Garmin Forerunner 101 and the Garmin Forerunner 201 not to long ago. These models are all in one piece. The Garmin Forerunner 101 and Garmin Forerunner 201 is not just for athletes, it will provide and display your longitude, latitude, and elevation. Garmin Forerunner 101 and Garmin Forerunner 201 are a little bulky compared to other models, but you do not have the extra piece and does a lot for a good price. The Garmin Forerunner 201 comes with a serial interface and A/C desktop charger.
The Garmin Forerunner 101 includes the same features as the Garmin Forerunner 201 but runs off 2 AAA batteries and is a little cheaper.

A couple of types of GPS tracking watches that Suunto manufacture are Suunto G9, which is a golf GPS tracking watch. This watch will measure data to help you make decisions on the golf course. While playing golf the GPS tracking watch will collect information and lets you later analyze your game performance, hence helping improve your game. It will suggest the club you need to use and give live feedback on the length of your shots.

Suunto also makes a M9, which is a personal sailing GPS tracking watch. This GPS tracking watch can provide meteorological trend information from the barometer and thermometer. It provides the shortest routes based off the wind changes it detects and all from your wrist.

Full name of GPS is the "Global Positioning System" that why it is called GPS? Their navigational system use satellites and computers to determine specific location data for user. It cans specification latitude, longitude, and also altitude of a receiver on Earth. To reach the receiver, GPS work by computing the time difference from different satellites for signal. The satellite navigation system that has full function is GPS only. More than twenty-four satellites GPS use to send the signals of radio to electronic GPS receivers. By this process, finding the distinct location of the receivers the satellites are able. GPS system can work under any weather conditions. Although under conditions of low visibility, GPS can let you know where are you now or can give the data of the destination where is your expected.

In 1985 GPS became in fully functional. And nowadays, GPS used for navigating on land, sea, and also air. Land surveying, mapmaking, and scientific research are also a benefits from GPS system. GPS signal has improved steadily in the last fifteen years. Pinpointing the receiver on Earth which accurately data can able by GPS system. It can calculate the user's location, latitude and longitude within five meters. We can predictable that improvements and developments of GPS system can locate location of the receiver within 1 cm in next year coming soon. Some scientific experiments had shown us that GPS gives an extremely precise time reference too.

United States Department of Defense developed the system of GPS to use in their jobs then we call "NAVSTAR GPS", an abbreviation for Navigation Signal Timing and Ranging Global Positioning Systems for officially name. The satellites revolving around the Earth used for GPS are launched to replace aging ones and now the total of satellites that GPS system used is twenty-seven. Because of improvement in technology, GPS devices have become less costly that give the benefits for people available use it free or low cost.

GPS Application

GPS can apply to use in many accessories we use in everyday life. Our mobile phone has GPS units inside cell phone. You can get a GPS for your bicycle if you want to know where you are, your exact speed, and your average time to destination which your current speed include accumulated time and distance of your ridding. Boats and motorcycles now have GPS also high-end cars. GPS is helpful for golf player. It will keep the track golf balls of your playing, collect information to analyze your game performance later, and give you live feedback on the length of your shots.

The watch also come with GPS technology now. GPS watch on your wrist can tell your location now, help you find the short and easy way to go to your expect place that you can keep your time to go there. For people who is like to exercise by jogging, GPS watch will inform your heart rate when you workout, your distance, your speed and more.

The Garmin Streetpilot: Is It Worth The Investment?

If you are a beginner to GPS devices or simply horrible with technology, then a good GPS unit for you will be the Garmin StreetPilot c320. Garmin calls this a Beginner's GPS and this is an accurate statement. As far as GPS devices go, this is remarkably easy to use with it being so simple to input your desired destination and other information, and the lack of the more complicated features of other models.

However, if you are looking for the latest GPS technology with all the whizz bang features of advanced models, then this shouldn't be your first choice. StreetPilot has produced an easy to use and functional car GPS with the basic features you should expect from a modern car navigator. And yet, you don't need to expect the operating difficulties that some of other units have. You can pretty much use it straight out of the box, with only a small amount of time required to learn how to operate it.

This GPS is designed specifically for your car coming with an in built speaker and some of the very best audio directions available. Utilizing Naqteq road maps, you can import 3rd party CSV files on to your system so that you can know where speed cameras, traffic hazards and school zones are to be found on your trip.

The screen can be read in sunlight and it comes with a battery charger that can be re-charged using the USB holder that comes with it. The battery will last about 8 hours after recharging.

The screen may be described as a screen with medium brightness. The user interface is akin to other Garmin units which use a touch screen for data input. But it contains only two controls other than the touchscreen. These are the ON/OFF push button and the "sliding fingertip" volume control.

Users utilize the USB interface to load maps and to upload or download any required data from the device. However, if you remove the SD card and use a memory card writer, the maps should load much faster. Map loading times may not be an issue for non-technological GPS users.

Like all contemporary car navigators, this GPS device free itself of almost ALL of the bad effects of GPS measurement inaccuracy that bother a lot of users. When CitySelect is used, the Street Pilot will "lock" your vehicle track to roads as long as you travel on the road. Another useful feature with CS/CN maps is that all approaching cross street names are displayed prior to arrival.

A Garmin StreetPilot is an easy to use and cheap GPS unit that any one who is a beginner with GPS or technology could use with ease.

How Much To Spend On A Handheld Gps?

Posted by Calipso | Tuesday, August 19, 2008 | 0 comments »

How Do I Know How Much To Spend On A Handheld Gps?

Other than choosing a GPS with the features you need, the very first thing you should decide is how much you're willing to spend - it might not cost that much, but until you know your dollar limit, you really can't make a good choice. So first decide what your budget allows and then start comparing features. I know it seems very confusing at first, but don't worry about it too much. Buying a handheld GPS might just turn out to be fun.

First think about what you really plan to do with your handheld GPS, only for finding your way back to where you started? Hiking and backpacking? Geocaching? How rugged does it need to be? Make sure it's waterproof. Do you need detailed road maps or topographic maps or will the sparse default base map be sufficient? Most handheld GPS units only come with base maps. Is a color screen important to you? Once you've used color you'll never go back to black and white. Be honest, you know I’m right. Does it need to be Waterproof? Yes. Most handhelds are waterproof. If you intend to use it for fishing, you might want to get a GPS unit specifically made for marine use. Is long battery Life important to you? Check the handheld's specifications. Do I need external antenna capabilities? You will need an antenna for poor reception areas like deep woods, or city buildings. Are you "computer or electronically challenged" and prefer doing it the easiest way (unit with preloaded maps)? Or would you be ok with using compact flash cards for loading specific geographic regions? More memory means you can download more detailed maps into the unit. But for hiking or geocaching, it may not be necessary. Do you have to keep the price under a specific amount?

Now as you get the idea, there are many choices and depending on what you're going to do with it, what your budget is, and what looks good to you, the buying decision is a personal one. Bottom line: more than likely you're going to be happy with whatever unit you buy.

What Gps Should I Buy???

Posted by Calipso | Tuesday, August 19, 2008 | 0 comments »

What To Buy?????

So you want to buy a GPS. Choices, yes ,staggering numbers as of late.So what should
you do? We at Action GPS Electronics recommend buying Factory Remanufactured
units.

So what's the logic behind this choice? Boy you ask a lot of questions.

There are many reasons,so lets start with number
1: Price.... New verses Factory Remanufactured can be as much as a 50% savings or more.

2. Warranty: New verses Factory Remanufactured? Guess what? Exactly the same at 1 year.

3. The cheaper price allows you to purchase a higher end unit with more features than some
new lower end units.Think about that for a minute. You can buy a higher priced model with
more features than most new lower end units. No brainer here.

4. This to me is one of the most important reasons I personally buy Factory Reconditioned
units, and the reason is just how quickly these units become obsolete and are replaced with
newer models with even more bells and whistles.

5. Finally, notice the large price drops on the older units the manufacturers are trying to
get rid of to make way for the newer models. When you buy new and pay top dollar,
your investment quickly loses its value in obsolescence and you probably have many
less features than the newer models.

6. One more thing that is very important."Theft" Leave your unit in your car even if it
is locked and you return to find your unit gone and hundreds of dollars worth of damage
to your car also that the thief left behind for you.One of the things I personally appreciate
about the newer units is that most of them are not much bigger than a new deck of cards
and they are so easy to take with you
Just pop it in your top pocket and go.
This will also allow you to use it while you are walking around in some unfamiliar city.
This is really a great new feature.

Many of the larger wide screen models again can be purchased used and are a favorite
with truckers and RV drivers who appreciate the larger easy to read screens.

In closing let me also say that many of the new units are multi functional in that you can use
them in your car and just take them with you and you can also use them in your boat with
the new software mapping that may be used in the same crossover type units that have
just recently come out.Let us not forget the motorcycle units that are really built more
ruggedly to withstand the vibration and off road uses of many motorcyclists.Garmin
boasts the 450 and 550 versions strictly designed for your motorcycle.

So again I ask you to review these thoughts and to consider a Factory Reconditioned unit
for any of the reasons above.Drop by www.actiongpselectronics.com for your purchase.

Innovative Service Improves Gps Accuracy

Posted by Calipso | Tuesday, August 19, 2008 | 0 comments »

The Global Positioning System (GPS), a worldwide radio-navigation system, is the tool of choice to collect spatial data for Geographic Information Systems (GIS). GIS data collected with GPS can support a variety of activities, including mapping and spatial analysis.

A stand-alone GPS receiver provides accuracies of approximately 5-15 meters in relation to the global reference frame; however, GPS positioning is subject to several error sources, such as atmospheric effects, satellite orbits and satellite clocks. These factors cause errors in the range-to-satellite, which amount to errors in position. Differential GPS (DGPS) corrections can be used to reduce these errors.

The MTO, in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), other provinces, territories and the federal government, have developed a new differential correction service to produce DGPS corrections, thereby increasing GPS standalone accuracy to about 1-2 meters (for high quality GPS receivers). The Canadian Differential Global Positioning System, or CDGPS, is the result of four years of development. The CDGPS radio receives a DGPS correction model via the MSAT-2 geostationary satellite, calculates corrections localized to the user, and outputs these corrections to a GPS receiver in standard format.

This free service is available for the entire Canadian landmass, including the far north. Other free DGPS services, such as the marine beacon and Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), fall short in this respect. Other commercial services involve yearly subscription plans in order to receive corrections.

The radio has a one-time cost of about $1,500. This does not include the cost of GPS equipment. After purchase, the service is free of charge.

CDGPS is the only service that provides corrections yielding positions directly relating to the Canadian Spatial Reference System - North American Datum 1983 (NAD83). WAAS, for example, outputs positions on the World Geodetic System 1984, which is different from NAD83 by as much as a meter. CDGPS was declared operational in October 2003. Shortly after, the Geometrics Office conducted several tests to determine the increase in accuracy possible using CDGPS corrections with various grades of GPS receivers under different conditions.

The tests confirmed the expected accuracy of about 1.5 meters for high quality GPS receivers using CDGPS.

What this means for the MTO is that anyone can purchase a standard piece of equipment to augment a high quality GPS receiver, in order to achieve meter-level positioning for their GIS data or mapping products. The development of CDGPS technology represents a progressive movement to enhance existing GPS positioning

Mapping The Way To The Future: Gps Navigation And Mapping Software

Revolutionizing Business with GPS and Mapping Software
In the modern business world, operating internationally on a heretofore inconceivable level, finding geographical information that is easy to access, precise, and up to date has become an absolute necessity. In the past, many companies were managed from the world’s superpower economies, like the US, the UK, and Japan, while operating in distant countries, sometimes on the opposite side of the globe. There was less global competition for international companies and there were a lot of sure bets. Recently, however, the number of globally operated companies has expanded exponentially, with companies from China, India, Saudi Arabia, and other emerging nations buying business assets even in the US itself. This new competition has made the globe a volatile marketplace.
Managing companies on the other side of the planet, understanding conditions being experienced by your branches around the world, and getting a solid reading of potential future business opportunities has only gotten easier, however. With the development of three converging technological concepts, it has become possible to tailor interactive maps to the specific needs of these organizations. Three key technologies have made this possible: Global Positioning Systems (enabling the use of GPS Navigation Software), Geographic Information Systems (creating the mapping software used as the basis of so many navigational tools now), and Web Mapping (using GPS mapping software to create up to date maps for a variety of specific purposes).
Geographic information systems have actually been around for centuries. In its most literal form, it simple refers to a map that indicates the importance of certain objects and regions. They actually date back to caveman days, with map paintings on the wall, showing markets, borders, and points of interest. As the world has progressed in complexity, however, so, too, have geographic information systems, providing more elaborate details specific to the particular issues of importance at the time.
With global positioning systems, or GPS, users can pinpoint precise locations across the globe. It can also be used to create maps of amazing and unprecedented accuracy, and locate objects anywhere in the world.

The GPS live vehicle tracking equipment is just an outstanding state-of-the-art electronic equipment. By making use of signals from satellites in the space, with the advent of the General Positioning Satellite (GPS), it is now possible to know the position, direction and speed of any car in real time with the GPS live car tracking tool.

The GPS live vehicle tracking tool is a tiny electronic tool to be put wherever within a car, even though many people prefer to put it underneath the carriage, aiming at hinting to the driver the actual position, direction and speed of the car in the space. Depending on its actual purpose, the GPS tracking vehicle in real time device can be installed in either the engine or in front of the driver. In the case it is used as a navigation aid, it could be placed in a magnetic box and the setup process is quite straightforward and quick. The driver will not even be aware of it. This opportunity thus made the GPS vehicle tracking in real time a good candidate of private investigation. This device can also be used for many purposes. For instance, it could be used to spy cheating wives at night, it could also be used to track teenagers’ cars when there are not experienced and responsible enough to drive their vehicles. Other applications of this device can be noticed by a serious need to deter car thieves and truck companies wishing to track the routes of a fleet of trucks in order to improve their delivery times. An employer also can make use of this device to make sure that his employees are not abusing company car privileges.

Having learned in depth its applications, it is now time to delve into his operational mode. First of all, it should be noted that the device is offered with a program already setup in a dedicated personal computer. Secondly, it sends signals to satellites present in the space. These satellites are used for multiple purposes such as TVs, internet, weather forecasts and tracking objects in the space. After transmitting the signals to the available satellite, this satellite in turns replies by sending another signal which is then interpreted by the software of the device installed on the other computer. Therefore the computer user can actually render its position in real-time.

With such information, it is straightforward to know the actual position, direction and speed of a given car. Some tools even go further by giving a history of previous positions and also offering you the wonderful opportunity to even watch the driver. This is important for some parents who are concerned of the safety driving of their children.

Important uses of the GPS live vehicle tracking equipment include law enforcement and deterring vehicle thieves. Furthermore, this tool is extensively used for police investigation. The same device can be used for other purposes such as spying a cheating wife and making sure that an employee is not abusing his company car privileges. With all these applications, it is reasonable to admit that the GPS live vehicle tracking is an amazing technology.

Gps Can Protect Your Child

Posted by Calipso | Tuesday, August 19, 2008 | 0 comments »

There is nothing more frightening to a parent than to be out with their child when suddenly, they turn around, and they are gone. Let's not forget that a child's mind wanders and when they have seen something of interest they go to investigate. It's easy for them to get separated from the parent, such as being at a carnival, and although it may only take two seconds to locate your child, it feels like two years and when you do find them your heart is racing, your hands are shaking and you don’t know whether to hug them or scold them.

The possibility of someone taking our child is a real fear every parent carries with them. Just pick up a newspaper or watch the evening news and reports of children being kidnapped or abducted are constant and the heartbreak of the parents is just so overwhelming. Now what if there was a technology that could find that child instantly?

GPS (Global Positioning System) technology is now being used to help keep track of children and allow parents to know where their child is at all times. These devices are usually small enough to fit anywhere-backpack, pants or coat pocket, etc. and lightweight enough not to be burdensome. Some of these have pre-programmable buttons so the child can keep in touch with their parents or call for help if necessary.

These devices range from tracking devices that will beep until the child is found, to cell phones with GPS technology installed, to watches that if forcibly removed will automatically activate. There are even backpacks available with GPS technology installed. Some of these will activate if the child is too far away from the parent. And there is even one that is implanted in a shoe.

Of course the main problems with these are the child is going to lose them, or if the child is abducted they can easily be disposed of. I can envision the day when it will be possible to have a GPS transmitter implanted in a child via an injection or some other simple manner.

There are other concerns also. Are only children with parents who can afford this technology are going to benefit. Is this going to increase the number of lower class children, whose parents can’t afford this new technology, being abducted? Will someone, such as a child molester or kidnapper, find a way to use a child’s transmitter signal to locate the child? Also how are our children to adjust to the fact that they are constantly being monitored?

How secure are our children going to feel knowing that the world is so dangerous that their parents need to know where they are at all times? Are we stripping a part of their childhood away from them? Who doesn’t remember, as a kid, going somewhere you knew your parents didn’t want you to go, but as children we are adventurers, and if we got into trouble or got ‘caught’ being where we shouldn’t be, we more than likely not only got punished but also learned a lesson. We grow and mature by making mistakes and learning from them, are we going to take part of this education away from our children? At what age do we stop? Do we continue to monitor them through their teen-age years? A time that can be the hardest time of any child’s or parents life, it’s a time where a teenager needs to mature and a parent needs to learn to ‘let go’ and allow the child to learn on their own-mistakes and all.

Although this technology has some very great qualities in the protection of our children, the possibility of abusing this technology must also be addressed. We all want our children to be safe, yet at the same time they must be allowed to grow to become functional adults.

How Do I Find The Gps Coordinates

Posted by Calipso | Tuesday, August 19, 2008 | 0 comments »

How Do I Find The Gps Coordinates Of A Location-definition And Application Of The Gps Map Coordinate

There are many coordinate systems available in mathematics. These aim at locating without ambiguity a given in regard to the origins of the coordinate system. Many coordinate systems are used in mathematics and physics. For instance, the Cartesian coordinate system and the polar coordinate system are used in science. The General Positioning System (GPS) makes use of coordinate systems based on the latitude and longitude tenets. The longitude of an object in the space is its angular distance (east or west) from a reference meridian, the Greenwich one for instance while the latitude is the angular distance (north or south) from the equator. In order to track an object in the space, we usually need its latitude as well as its longitude. For instance, as soon as a GPS device sends signals to a satellite positioned in the space, the satellite will work your exact coordinates before sending another signal to the receiver of your GPS device. Using this process, the GPS system can determine your exact position, heading and speed.

At the beginning, many GPS systems used to ask to the user to manually input his map coordinate. However, for people not knowing anything about mathematics or even about the suitable coordinate system to be used, they were quickly annoyed. In order to address this setback, GPS system vendors have founded a new way to automatically compute a map coordinate. This way, your GPS device will be assigned the right and suitable map coordinate for your given destination in order to work out your accurate location, speed and heading. However, users may still manually type the map coordinates if they fancy, but they should bear in mind that the device was designed to perform that difficult task. This accounts for its usefulness especially for traveling purposes. Being aware of all this information beforehand is a huge boon for your trip.

Exceptional mathematicians are still allowed to enter their customized GPS map coordinates. However, as the device can perfectly compute its best map coordinates, there is really no need to waste your time doing so. Nowadays, many GPS systems are able to work out map coordinates with a good precision. They can also provide you with useful information for your trip especially if you are heading to a place where you have never been. They can also download breaking news from a bunch of websites.

Due to the fact that GPS systems only work with longitude and latitude, you may need to know what these tenets stand for. You should also bear in mind that the map coordinates are worked out automatically by the device for you shortly when you switch your device on; therefore there is no need to reinvent the wheel! You will find that GPS systems are good travel companions.

Briefly speaking, coordinate systems are used to locate the position of an object in the space. The GPS technology makes use of longitude and latitude mathematical tenets to locate object in the space. Nowadays, many GPS devices offer the outstanding possibility to automatically compute the right GPS map coordinates for your specific destination. Therefore, there is no need to have excellent mathematical skills before enjoying your device. This is amazing, isn’t it?

Talking About The Magellan Gps

Posted by Calipso | Tuesday, August 19, 2008 | 0 comments »

Headquartered in Santa Clara, California, the Magellan GPS company has been a leader in direct to consumer portable navigation devices since the industry started taking off a few years ago. In fact, the Magellan GPS RoadMate series of portable car navigation systems has even won some awards. Because of the huge success that Magellan GPS has had in recent years, they have opened up another headquarters, this time in Europe (Carqufou, France to be exact).

There are several different types of Magellan GPS devices that are available to consumers, depending on what their needs are. The Magellan GPS Triton is handheld and designed for outdoor navigation. It has a full color, large display screen that shows the graphics in good detail. Created for the outdoorsy types, the Magellan GPS Triton has a rugged exterior (great in the event that you drop things a lot) and is also waterproof. The Magellan GPS Triton comes in six different models.

The Magellan GPS Maestro is another kind of GPS system, this one designed for use in the vehicle. It provides turn by turn directions and can give you information on how to get to just about any destination in North America. It has a touch screen, which is really easy to use (even if you are old and try to avoid technology at all costs). To get directions, all you have to do is enter in the address of your destination. From there, you can either get a two or three dimensional map. Additionally, with its friendly voice, the Magellan GPS Maestro will talk you through all of the turns that you need to make.

If you are interested in combining the features of the Magellan GPS Triton and the Magellan GPS Maestro, the Magellan GPS Crossover is perfect. In fact, it is the first pocket sized, fully featured, crossover GPS to ever be made on earth. Because of its size, it is perfect to take with you camping, hiking, or wherever you may be headed on foot or bike outside. However, it also has the programming design that enables you to put it in your car and get the same kind of directions that you would expect in a vehicle navigation system. The Magellan GPS Crossover has the best of both worlds! Plus, because they have been on the market for a while, just about all Magellan GPS systems are more affordable than ever.

Things You Should Know About Gps

Posted by Calipso | Tuesday, August 19, 2008 | 0 comments »

There are six things you need to know before you buy a GPS for your vehicle. What do most people use a GPS for? The most popular use is to get turn-by-turn directions while driving from point A to point B. Some popular car navigational units are the Magellan Roadmates, the Garmin Nuvi units, and the new Navigon GPS units.

1 - Screen Size and sound are important. Especially while driving. The screen should be readable and bright, Also Make sure the buttons are big enough for your fingers, so that you aren't pressing multiple buttons at the same time. Vehicles are noisier than you may think. Driving noise can make it difficult to hear weak audio. Be sure to check out the sound quality to make sure you can understand what is being said. It should be clear and loud so that you can hear it in your vehicle.

2 - Downloadable Maps and memory. Most GPS units come with maps built in. A lot of them can download maps as well. It is a good idea to purchase one that has the ability to download maps, so that you map doesn't get outdated.

Memory - the more memory the GPS unit has, the more locations, waypoints, landmarks, and maps you can save.

3 - The time it takes a GPS to find and display information. This depends on the number of channels a GPS has. The more channels the unit has the better the reception. Take this into consideration. You don't want to have to pull over and wait for it to get map data if you make a wrong turn.

4 - Does the unit speak street names? This is very helpful. If it does not say the street names and it tells you to turn right. You may have to glance at the unit to check the street name. This can be dangerous.

5 - What type of batteries are used with the GPS? Are they normal rechargeable AA batteries or are they special manufacturer batteries? Also how long do they last.

6 - Bluetooth is great for those who need to use cell phones while driving, With Bluetooth the driver can make and receive hands-free calls through the unit's speaker and microphone, and view their telephone book and access caller ID on the screen. What an amazing feature. Of course blue-tooth enabled units are little more expensive.

Those are the six things you need to know before you buy a GPS.

Here's a quick note about mapping data:

All Magellan Garmin and NAVIGON GPS units use NAVTEQ mapping data, while TomTom uses Tele Atlas. I've done research online and found that both NAVTEQ and Tele Atlas are both good and I would not base my decision on which mapping data the GPS uses.

Download Free Maps Gps - Enhancing Your Gps Device With Additional Gps Maps

Several General Positioning System (GPS) maps are already provided with your GPS device when you buy it. Because these maps are offered for free, there is an overhead in getting them. Indeed, these maps do not allow any tweaking in order to meet your specific needs. Another drawback of these built-in maps is their lack of knowledge about your given destination. For instance, let assume you want to travel to Philippines; it is obvious that you will appreciate details about this location beforehand. If your device was purchased in Brazil, you will be very lucky if it has any knowledge about Philippines. Therefore this GPS map cannot act as a travel aid.

Many GPS devices are used as travelling guides for a trip. Therefore GPS devices have superseded our old map artifacts. You may be wondering how useful a GPS device is. It is obvious that having detailed information about your trip in advanced will only make it more enjoyable, faster, safer and reduce any risks during your trip.

Although there are several programs that can be purchased to install new GPS maps on your device, there are also several free programs that can be used for the same purpose. In order to use these, some software prerequisites should be installed at first. These include the cables of your device. You do not to worry about it because they are included with your device when you purchase it.

They are also many websites that can help you to design our own GPS maps. By customizing your maps, you will be able to pinpoint specific locations you are fond of. These include restaurants, bars, night clubs, schools and so forth. You may add traffic reports in your GPS maps in order to avoid traffic jam during your journey.

Another outstanding benefit of GPS systems is their ability to record several maps. For instance, if you are traveling a lot to the same place, your GPS device can save all your personal information once so that the trip you will not be asked to enter your personal details and preferences.

When you have a GPS system, you may find it easier to have many maps about your trips. This will make your trip very enjoyable. You should therefore spend some time looking at pre-installed maps as well as other amazing features of your system.

Briefly speaking, GPS maps offer you the unique opportunity you explore your final destination without heading there. This is very interesting because it is sometimes recommended to glance at a country before formally deciding to go there. Some GPS maps provide outstanding features such as an unlimited online access to view, print, save aerial pictures. Some of them also come with bunch of programs allowing you to personalize them, add texts, graphics, compute GPS coordinates, upload your GPS coordinates and plot them atop of your maps. Updating new GPS maps to your device can be a very daunting experience. There are available in many shopping centers not for free. If you are looking for free stuff, you should definitely look on the internet as several, interesting maps are available.

Travel Kit - This feature is one of the reasons why the Garmin Nuvi 350 is above the rest. Gps Technology On The Road

Posted by Calipso | Tuesday, August 19, 2008 | 0 comments »

In recent times there have been some tremendous advances in the technology behind GPS (Global Positioning Satellites), and now this exciting technology is available to the general public. There are many uses for GPS, but the particular use we will be looking at in this article is its benefits for the motorist.

The in-car system comprises of an easily mounted small unit which you attach to your windscreen or place on your dashboard. The great benefit is that once you have the unit installed in your car, you just key in your required destination, it will then give you turn by turn directions by voice and in real time.

This is extremely useful for any travelers who are in an unfamiliar area, which of course applies to most of us at one time or another. Nearly all car rental firms are now installing GPS units in their entire fleet of vehicles as an aid to their customers, and of course this also has advantages for them.

Another benefit is that if you are unfortunate enough to have your GPS equipped vehicle stolen, the authorities can pinpoint the exact location of it with ease. There are several insurance companies that will offer you a discount if your car is fitted with GPS.

A lot of GPS systems on the market come equipped with monitoring services, which can help with roadside assistance, and help in any emergency situation. The in-car system has the capability to be automatically programmed to call the nearest 911 operator if an accident occurs.

The good thing is that as these services utilize satellites, the signal will never suffer any interruption no matter you may be. So you can see what a valuable piece of equipment an in-car GPS unit can be, as it is available 24/7. So, if you ever find yourself in an emergency situation, you will be glad you invested in this piece of technology and have piece of mind!

Driving Made Easier With Gps

Posted by Calipso | Tuesday, August 19, 2008 | 0 comments »

Navigating using maps can be very frustrating especially if you are doing so while driving your car. This becomes even more stressful when you are driving by yourself in a strange territory. Sometimes, the person with you isn't much help either, because more often than not, your traveling companion would end up confusing you more than helping you navigate the road.

But traveling does not have to be this way anymore. It doesn't even have to be stressful. If you think it is the map that is causing you your problems, then you better just toss it outside your vehicle's window. Instead, go get a new car GPS receiver and use it instead of the map.

Car GPS Devices

Simply said, a car GPS device is a GPS receiver especially designed for cars and their navigation systems. Like all other types of GPS receivers, car GPS devices can also receive signals from GPS satellites and can use the information carried by these signals to determine its current location. But because they are meant to be used on moving vehicles, they must be stuffed with features specific to vehicle navigation's systems.

In particular, car GPS devices must be able to give you the best possible route towards your destination. It must also be able to recalculate your route in case you miss a particular route instruction. It must also have a text and/or voice system for giving directions. Other basic features that all car GPS devices must have are:

• Map storage system • Screen or display that can handle images of more than 320x240 pixels in size at a resolution and brightness suitable for driving. • Address book for storing frequently visited addresses and points of interest • Detachable or external antenna for better GPS visibility

Now, there are a lot of car GPS devices of different kinds and brands available for every type and brand of car there is today. Because of this, you may find it difficult to select the particular car GPS that would perfectly fit your needs, should you want to experience the functionality of one.

In general, however, you've got two options should you want to travel with a car GPS device. The first option is to purchase a vehicle with built-in or fixed car GPS system. The other option is to purchase a portable car GPS device suitable for your car.

Buying a Vehicle with a Fixed Car GPS Device

Built-in or fixed car GPS devices can usually be found only on brand new luxury vehicles. As such, you definitely wouldn't see this option viable if you don't have the cash to purchase a luxury vehicle. But for those who can easily afford one, this can be the best option because the GPS device is already integrated in the vehicle's system. This removes all the hassle of installing the car GPS device on the vehicle and loading additional navigation software on the system.

Buying a Portable Car GPS Device

For those who simply can't afford a new luxury vehicle but still wants to enjoy the functionality of a car GPS system, the viable option for him is to purchase a portable car GPS device. Now, for this type of car GPS device, you are again given two options: a portable car GPS preloaded with maps or a unit that would require you to transfer map data from your PC to the device.

Since the car GPS device needs to have a map in either option, choosing a car GPS unit preloaded with maps would seem to be a wiser choice. But while this type of car GPS device will save you from all the hassles of loading maps to the system, it also costs higher ($1,000-$1,500) than the other option.

The greatest advantage of portable car GPS units that requires map transfers, on the other hand, is their price, which would generally sell at the $500 to $800 range. Installing the system on your car, however, may be quite difficult and laborious.

Gps Makes Golfing Easier

Posted by Calipso | Tuesday, August 19, 2008 | 0 comments »

Golfers have improve their game with GPS systems. The GPS (Global Positioning Systems) is a fairly new technology that can help the golfer judge distance along with a variety of other features. As the technology has become more popular among golfers so has the variety of golf GPS systems available to them. Different golfers want and need different information as they seek to improve their game, so in choosing a golf GPS system, the golfer needs to know exactly what he or she is looking for, while also considering price and convenience in using each type of system.

One type of golf GPS system is a sports watch with GPS capabilities. These watches are very convenient since the golfer does not have to carry around awkward pieces of equipment with him or her while on the golf course. These watches are defiantly bigger then a traditional watch and are not recommended for everyday wear, but while on the course they are very functional. They can judge distance and some can even recommend which club to use. These watches are able to gain information about a particular golf course when the owner downloads information from the internet about the course into the watch; this eliminates the need to manually put in all of the information.

Sonocaddie is another type of golf GPS. These handheld devices are able to tell the golfer the distance between him or her and anywhere else on the course. Just like with the watch, these devices allow the person to download golf course information from their computer into the GPS system, making the information very accurate.

SureshotGPS systems are also very useful particularly for those that like to travel to different countries to play golf. These GPS are capable of working worldwide and measures distance in both meters and yards. They are very portable, making it easy for the golfer to carry it along with him or her as he or she plays golf.

For people who have certain types of cell phones, there is also technology available that allows the person to download golf GPS information directly to their cell phone.

Along with these different types of golf GPS systems, there are others being developed. One type of technology is GPS golf balls. The use of this technology will allow the golfer to locate his or her ball if it is missing and will be able to tell the golfer how far the ball actually traveled.

There are many other types of golf GPS systems available to choose from. The different choices available to golfers interested in this type of technology could easily become overwhelmed as he or she tries to decide which one is the best. The best golf GPS system is the one that gives the individual golfer the information he or she needs and is the most convenient based on individual circumstances and individual person. The GPS sports watch may be perfect for one person, but may actually interfere with another golfer if that person is not used to wearing a watch, especially since this watch is larger then a normal watch.

Some golfers may be very comfortable with technology and would benefit from a golf GPS system with many features and capabilities. Other golfers, who are not as comfortable with technology would probably prefer the old fashion methods and dismiss these devices. The technology of any GPS system will not benefit anyone who is not familiar with it and can take advantage of the information that comes from it.
